Noreena was born in Wiluna and grew up on Lake Violet Station. Her mother Daisy had been taken from her family as a child and placed in the Moore River settlement. The film Rabbit Proof Fence tells Daisy’s story. Noreena went to school in Meekatharra and afterwards worked at a hostel in Marble Bar before moving to be with her family at Jigalong and eventually Parngurr, where she now lives.

Nalda Searles came to Parnngurr and we coiled baskets all night and all day. All night and all day – no sleep in Parnngurr!

We gather the minari [a type of grass] from our own Country and we like lovely coloured wool. We design baskets to remind us of the piti [wooden dishes] we used to carry on our heads. Some women use tin bases, or try out different shapes or materials. It’s always lovely when we sit and weave together.
